The real problem

You Were Right All Along

Think about the last time you tried to explain your pain, whether to a doctor or to someone close to you. The way you searched for words that were precise enough to be believed but careful enough not to sound like too much. The way you watched their face for signs of doubt. You have become very skilled at making your pain sound reasonable. That is what years of not being understood do to a person.

Somewhere along the way, you began to wonder if they had a point. If the pain was something you were carrying, amplifying, creating in some way you did not fully understand. The system has a way of installing that doubt. Through the repeated implication that if nothing is showing up on the tests, the variable must be you.

But you had a sense, before you ever read this, that the source of your pain was somewhere other than where they kept treating it. That sense never quite left, did it? Even when you almost stopped trusting it.

That sense is clinically accurate. You were right to keep searching for answers all along.

There is a tissue system in your body that is densely populated with pain-sensitive nerve endings. It appears on no scan. It responds to no medication. And it falls entirely outside the training of almost every practitioner in conventional medicine.

Why nothing has worked

A Tissue System That Falls Entirely Outside Their Training

Fascia is a single continuous web that envelops every muscle, threads around every nerve, and communicates across the entire body as one unified system. Research published in Clinical Anatomy has identified specialised cells called fasciacytes that produce hyaluronic acid, the substance that allows Fascia to glide and function properly (Stecco et al., 2018).

When it becomes restricted, it generates pressure on surrounding nerves and structures that appears on no scan and responds to no standard treatment. The body is telling the truth. The tools being used to listen to it simply were not built to hear this particular signal.

Because it is continuous, a restriction in one place pulls on everywhere else. That is why the place that hurts is almost never the place with the problem, and why treating the painful area gave you relief that never lasted. It is also why the scans came back clear. An MRI does not pick up this tissue at all, so the restriction sitting in it was never going to appear on the film.

Every Appointment That Led Nowhere Had the Same Explanation Behind It.

The practitioners you saw were working from a training framework that simply does not include this system. That is the whole story. Your pain was real and the map they were using had a gap where Fascia should be.

Elite sport understood this years ago. James spent five years on Everton FC's first team medical staff applying exactly this thinking. The NHS has not caught up. That gap is precisely where Physology works, and this book is that work written down.

See the tissue for yourself

Fascia: The Root of Your Pain

This is a short video explaining Fascia, along with visuals of the tissue. Please notice this is a physical tissue and it makes up around 80% of your body. That 80% is missed by your traditional healthcare practitioner. Everything in this book explains the full system we use at Premier League level, and how you can build that treatment system wherever you live in the world.

The obvious question

How Can You Help Me Physically with a Book?

If you were local to my Bath clinic, you would come for treatment and I would take you through the whole process. The Physology Method is that process. From your Fascia, to your nervous system and your gut health, to Fascia focused movement, the entire system is in house.

Most people who find me online via our social media reach are too far away to come for treatment. Most of our followers are not even in the UK, so this book is for you. It walks you through the entire process and educates you in a way that gives you back control of your future life.

The second half of the book then helps you build The Physology Method with practitioners who are local to you. They will be experts in their own parts, and with your newfound knowledge you can guide yourself through The Physology Method wherever you are in the world.

Finding practitioners can be difficult if you do not know what to look for, and the book helps you with this too. From the initial Google search to a vetting system, it helps you build your local team and, within three months, take yourself through the entire process.

School teacher, Bath. 17 years of back pain
★★★★★
I tried Physology as a last resort before giving up and accepting that I would have to live with it for the rest of my life. James was the first person to sit and listen to my whole story. He helped me understand how my body should be working and what had been causing my back problems for all of these years. Don't give up on yourself until you've tried Physology.

Undiagnosed leg symptoms since 2016, medical dismissal
★★★★★
I can hardly express how grateful I am to have met James. The problems with my legs started way back in 2016. I just about managed to function, sleep and hold down a job. However, they became so much worse after Christmas 2023. I haven't been able to work since. I've barely been able to sleep, despite taking a heavy dose of sleeping pills. I've also been to the emergency room 4 times, including twice in an ambulance. I've seen physios, mental health professionals, many GPs, various specialists, chiropractors, acupuncture specialists and osteopaths. It has really taken its toll in all ways imaginable. My symptoms are pulling, twisting, winding, unwinding, popping, grinding. I could go on. Even though my symptoms are very physical, I've been treated like a mental health patient, even by my own family. My symptoms have completely flummoxed every single professional I have seen. Once, while expressing my symptoms to a GP, I was met by . Then by, . She had prescribed me antibiotics for a supposed infection that I knew I didn't have and which I picked up, but never took. My partner called 111 a couple of times and I ended up with a home treatment mental health team, who prescribed me anti psychotics. When I discovered they helped me with sleep I was happy to take them. I have since come off them and now take a non addictive sleeping pill. When I met James I was literally at the end of my rope. He is such a lovely, kind, smart, interesting, empathetic and professional man. I couldn't believe it when he normalized all of my symptoms. Not only that, he listened attentively to my story and provided excellent feedback. I was shocked, to say the least, after what I've been through over the past couple of years with other professionals. Not only that, he spent a long time educating me about what's going on in my body. I immediately felt at ease. I really appreciated that consultation and I've never had a better one in my life. If this speaks to you I urge you to reach out to James. I have hope for the first time in a very long time. I feel so lucky to have found him. I've had my first appointment, which has already helped me and I trust that he will help me more and more as time goes on. Thank goodness for you, James.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, 27 years
★★★★★
When you are chronically ill every new treatment you try is an investment, and it can be so disheartening when you don't get to feel any real recovery. After 27 years of Fibromyalgia and Chronic fatigue, and having tried many treatments, James' experienced methods are the first to provide massively significant physical progress, rather than just momentary soothing, and the best investment so far. Two months ago I couldn't walk half a mile to work without stopping twice on a small hill and feeling a lot of distress, and could rarely walk home at all after a day at work so my husband would pick me up, sometimes in tears. I couldn't walk up any incline, stairs especially, without feeling immediately completely drained like I was wearing 20 pairs of leggings. I couldn't do my exercises given to me by my physio for neck and shoulder issues because my fascia was so stuck it caused distress trying to complete the movements, so new issues would just keep piling up. I could go on with many more debilitating limitations but the important news is that within the first two treatments alone James had released enough stuck fascia that I could walk using the full length of my feet, and my hips and my glutes for the first time in many years. Instead of using action muscles just to hold myself up, leaving no capacity to be able to move with them efficiently, I am now using the correct muscles that were previously inhibited by stuck fascia, and allowing increased oxygen and blood flow to the muscles I need to walk. My muscles have a lot of catching up to do now that the right ones are doing the right jobs and that will be a journey in itself, but now I can do my qi gong, walk to and from work at a constant steady pace without having to stop, walk upstairs without pulling myself up with my arms, and do my physio exercises. I still have many layers to unstick after a lifetime of issues, I can still feel like I have run a marathon at the end of a day, and fatigue still slows me down, yet I don't seize up completely on the couch by 6pm, I can still walk right up until bedtime and I have gone from feeling like I live in a straight jacket inside an iron maiden to being able to enjoy using my body to contribute to my own progress. To top all that, 5 days ago I went out and danced for a whole hour for the first time in many years, after a day at work too! James demonstrates huge dedication to his fascia work; he has truly mastered treating a much overlooked body system that can cause SO many ailments when left untreated, and he helps you understand that system enough to be able to be a part of the process. Mobility and Empowerment! I am definitely on my way to happier times. I will be forever grateful that I found James at Physology.

Fibromyalgia, 8 years
★★★★★
Charlie Dance I had fibromyalgia for about 8 years and came to Physology when I was looking for myofascial release on Google. The consultation was amazing, we went through everything in so much detail and I actually felt listened to for the first time. I was pain free in about 15 sessions spread over 3 months ish with every session feeling better and better. I got advice too about my food and made some changes that definitely stopped my fibromyalgia flares too. Every now and again I'll just have a top up because the sessions feel great but I live pain free and certainly don't feel like I had fibromyalgia as they described it at the Doctors. Definitely really recommend for myofascial release and more!

Fibromyalgia, low back pain and burning sensations
★★★★★
Went to these guys for my fibromyalgia symptoms which was mainly low back pain and burning sensations. And i had treatments over the course of two months. Never had treatment like it before, it's hard to explain. It's hands on, and they explained to me about the fascia and how they release it. They got me pain free in that time so I definitely recommend it to anyone with fibromyalgia pain.

Ex-professional footballer, Everton connection
★★★★★
Met James via some one in the gym who had got pain free from James. I'm an ex professional footballer. I was pro at the time and thinking my career was over because I kept getting injured and in constant pain. I was in the gym when I met one of James clients who saw me and said to try him cos of the work he's done with Everton. I went to him and was shocked how his approach is almost opposite to the advice I got from my club physio. I told the club and they were happy to go with James treatment and recommendations. He got me pain free, fixed my back pain and hamstring issues. And I got that season finished. Managed to get another few years in full time before I retired from full time after 20 years in the game. We're good mates now, definitely go see him if you have any pain, in sport or not, his approach is different and myofascial release is different too.

QL/psoas injury, bulging disc in neck
★★★★★
I couldn't recommend James at Physology enough. I came across Physology on Instagram in my quest to find a treatment that works for a chronic lower back pain from a QL/psoas injury and bulging disc in the neck resulting in chronic neck and shoulder pain. It was one of James' educational posts that caught my attention. It very well described the pain I had, why that hurt and why it was so persistent despite the treatments I had. I then decided to contact James and booked an initial consultation. At the initial appointment, James truly listened to everything I brought up and spent a good amount of time explaining about fascia and how he worked with it. This educational part was as important as the initial treatment itself. James patiently guided me so I was able to give him feedback that helped him do precise work on the targeted body parts effectively. I felt truly listened to for the first time and did not feel rushed out of the room. James was very skillful, he was able to get me out of pain quickly even after only a few minutes of the initial treatment. I'm now still continuing with the treatments and James has been working wonders since. Thanks, James!

Lower back pain and muscle imbalances, 20+ years, weight training
★★★★★
I had suffered with lower back pain and muscle imbalances for over 20 years due to weight training, but in the last few years it began to seriously affect my performance and day-to-day life. I had tried physiotherapy and also seen an osteopath, but the pain always returned and nothing provided lasting relief. A friend recommended, James and Physology, and although I was unsure at first, I decided to give it a try. After contacting James, my first appointment was booked quickly. He explained the cause of the problem and his approach with great clarity, which put me at ease. From the very first session, I felt an instant improvement in mobility and movement. After a few sessions, I was able to train and run again completely pain free, with far more flexibility than I'd had in years. Since then, I've continued to see James for maintenance sessions and have remained pain free ever since. The whole process has worked extremely well for me, and I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend James.

Lower back pain since teens
★★★★★
Alger. James' treatment is life changing. I had suffered with lower back pain since my teens and it affected my whole life. I had constant pain that was preventing me from doing any active sports or lifting without it cramping. I never reached excruciating pain but it was always at least a 5 out of 10 and enough to stop me living without having to think about it all the time. I had physio, treatments, sports massage, and scans from professional sports clubs, and through the NHS over several years. None of them could identify what was wrong and none of them helped. Once I met James and Physology, it was literally the first session, there was such a release I felt like he'd created an actual hole in that area. As I moved, I could feel zero pulling, like the whole area just opened up. I finished in just a few weeks and have lived pain free from that ever since. Anyone looking for myofascial release or back pain relief, I'd always say try James. It's made the difference for me. Thank you!

Sciatic nerve pain
★★★★★
I'd being struggling with sciatic nerve pain for a few months. Osteopathy treatments were helping to some extent. Then the pain really flared up and I was unable to work. Luckily I found Physology! James had a kind, genuine manner and took time to get a really detailed understanding of everything that was contributing to the pain. He was extremely knowledgeable about fascia and muscles, and how to get to the root cause of pain and resolve it. He took care to explain everything so I could understand what was happening in my body. After the first treatment I felt a big difference in my posture, and with every subsequent treatment it felt like another layer of damage was undone. I can definitely recommend Physology for resolving pain, and as an excellent investment in your long-term mobility.

Fascia and tendon problems, 6 months of treatment
★★★★★
I have drastically improved physically after being treated by James over the past 6 months which I had serious fascia and tendon problems for a year and half prior to meeting him but now I can function properly physically which makes me appreciate being able to move without thinking about it. The rehabilitation in improving balance from my diaphragm/core with the ball work has definitely gave me stability I didn't realise I was seriously lacking, which he also encouraged me to get 12000 steps at least 4 times a week to help with blood flow for the dehydrated tissues and tendons. I can't thank James enough and I will be checking in with him for the foreseeable for maintenance as I am nearing full fitness.

Found Physology googling myofascial release
★★★★★
I found Physology after googling myofascial release. I booked a consultation and went to see James soon after. The initial appointment was 2 hours long. In the first hour James listened to my pain symptoms to build a picture of when/how things started. He then explained the techniques he had studied and showed me videos to back up the science behind this. He explained everything in great detail and it really made sense as to why no other treatments had fully worked before. In the second half of the session, James started the treatment on my back. I could feel it working straight away and my shoulder felt easier to move after. I am looking forward to the next series of treatments with high hopes for being in less pain eventually.

Knee pain, almost 10 years
★★★★★
I had a great first experience with James today, he is very professional and really knowledgeable. He explained to me how fascia release works and right knee definitely felt lighter and eased pain. Looking forward to my next sessions. After having even more sessions with James, my almost 10 years of knee pain is finally manageable, I'm really happy with my progress, thank you so much.

Chronic back pain, gym and sport
★★★★★
Had chronic back pain from the gym and sports over the years. Met James randomly at work and when I found out what he did I thought I'd give it a go. We spoke about fascia for ages and I found it really interesting. He got me pain free from the back pain pretty quickly which he said was easier cos I'm young. The bonus is that it helped my training massively. My range and movement in the gym is loads better too. Definitely recommend to anyone who is active in bits of pain or anything more serious or if you just want to train better.

PT for David Lloyd
★★★★★
I'm a pt for David Lloyd and I met James through a friend a few years ago. We spoke about fascia for ages and he told me about fibromyalgia and the stuff he does in sport etc. I was fine at the time generally but wanted to still try the treatment because the fascia work sounded amazing. I'd say to all my clients now, myofascial release is a game changer. It opened my body up loads to where I could train harder for longer, and recover faster. I've sent people to James with fibromyalgia, back pain, sciatica etc and everyone has been helped and ill continue to do so!

Gym-related back pain

I go to Physology for my back pain which is mostly just from training at the gym when I over do it. I get myofascial release and deep stretching done and I'm pain free again quickly. Definitely recommend to others! Thanks James

28 years of daily pain
★★★★★
I had spent 28 years seeing every specialist I could find, costing tens of thousands of pounds and still experiencing daily pain. I walked out of my first session pain free and astounded. Two months on and I have just come back from Thailand. Not even a minute of pain. Whatever magic James has worked is miraculous.

Common questions

What People Ask Before They Buy

Yes. Chapter one and the end of chapter nine are open to read, straight out of the PDF, so you can see exactly what you would be buying before you spend anything. Read them here.

The framework is built for pain that has lasted more than a few months and that nobody has been able to explain or resolve. Fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, sciatica, widespread pain, the knee or shoulder or neck that keeps coming back. What those have in common is that the tissue generating the signal was never examined, and that is the same tissue in every case. Chapter twenty is clear about the small number of situations where you need your doctor first instead.

You start that week. Chapter thirteen is a four-week nutritional protocol, and every instruction in it arrives with the mechanism behind it and the research it rests on. What comes out and what that input has been doing to you. What goes in, and how often. Then a ten supplement stack, introduced in sequence across the first fortnight, every one of them at a stated dose for a stated reason.

Chapter twelve builds your local team. Where these practitioners are and what their website tells you before you pick up the phone. The questions to ask, and what a skilled answer to each one sounds like. A way to measure yourself at home, so the first session is judged on evidence rather than impression, and a standard that session has to meet before you book another. Chapter sixteen then maps the weeks that follow, so you can price the work locally and know at every stage whether you are on track.

Less than you are doing now to manage it. The food side is a change to what you buy rather than a regime, plus the supplements in chapter thirteen. The hands-on work is appointments you attend. The movement work is minutes a day once a practitioner has shown you. There is nothing in the book that asks you to find an hour you do not have.

The nutritional and hydration work starts the week you read it, and most people notice something within the first fortnight. The fascial work moves at the pace of your appointments. Chapter sixteen sets out the arc week by week, so you always know whether what you are feeling is on track.

A single PDF, 276 pages. It opens on a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a desktop, and it prints cleanly on A4 if you would rather read it on paper. The contents page is linked and the chapters are bookmarked, so you can move around it quickly.

P.S. One payment and the file is yours. Nothing to subscribe to, nothing that expires, and no second thing to buy afterwards.

P.P.S. Every week somebody tells me they wish they had understood this years ago. The book exists so that the understanding does not depend on getting an appointment in Bath.
